China and the Palestinian– Israeli conflict

ROUTLEDGE HANDBOOK ON CHINA-MIDDLE EAST RELATIONS

What has been China’s approach to the Palestinian–Israeli conflict and conflict management? To answer these questions, the chapter notes the conflict’s asymmetrical nature, which favors Israel, and its resolution, which is framed within the Oslo process – and enjoys international acceptance even as it loses legitimacy on the ground. China’s support for Oslo is the endpoint of a journey that began by supporting Palestinian militancy in the 1960s and now involves strong diplomatic and commercial ties with Israel. More recently, as China’s presence in the Middle East has grown, it has shown interest in resolving regional conflicts through its “peace through development” model.
