Israel-Hamas: What Room for International Mediation?

“China’s position on the current Israel-Hamas war is complicated by the different levels through which it can be understood. For one, Beijing would welcome the chance to be a mediator and help broker a ceasefire, thereby boosting its prestige, especially after it brokered the Saudi-Iran agreement earlier this year. However, China’s prospects are compromised by Israeli perceptions of past Chinese support for the Palestinians’ cause and struggle. This is despite more extensive economic exchange between China and Israel than that between the Palestinians and China. Additionally, Beijing probably sees the conflict through regional and geopolitical lenses. It wants to shore up its support in the wider Arab world outraged by Israel’s attacks in Gaza and position itself against the Israelis’ principal ally: the United States.”
